Fiber optic cabling provides a greater level of security than copper cabling and is therefore used extensively for military and other data sensitive networks. In this example, Fast Ethernet clients are connected to the core over a pure fiber network using Layer 2 and Layer 3 fiber switches.The Layer 2 edge switches provide additional security through the use of Access Control List (ACL) functionality and IEEE 802.1x that limits access to unauthorized users.
