Séché Environnement in France is a major part of the larger Séché Group. It deals with hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment, management, and disposal. The company offers many essential services, including hazardous substance destruction, polluted soil and site decontamination, and emergency intervention after industrial accidents and natural disasters.

Séché Trédi Salaise: a multifaceted treatment center

One of the waste management plants for Séché Environnement, Séché Trédi Salaise deals with hazardous and non-hazardous waste recovery and treatment for local industry. Main activities include non-hazardous and hazardous waste thermal treatment, medical waste thermal treatment, and a hazardous waste sorting/grouping platform. Environmental services include asbestos transit, and an energy recovery unit which is efficient enough to produce excess electricity to be used in the region.

The Séché Trédi Salaise plant produces enough excess power for 40,000 people per year.

The field of waste recovery is always evolving and requires continual innovation alongside increasingly sophisticated technologies. “We needed to ensure a flexible and high capacity infrastructure that would guarantee continuous growth and reliable operation for all our services,” says Luc Therrien, Senior Industrial Automation Project Manager, Seche Group.

Leveraging the age of IoT for seamless business operation

The Séché Trédi Salaise hazardous waste processing plant had been working with an old data network that struggled to support their plant, which incorporates an office block with central control room, and four waste processing buildings. A network upgrade would better enable the many Internet of Things (IoT) devices to support efficient operation. “To converge our security cameras, building automation sensors, industrial machinery, as well as the many systems that control the waste management processes, we required a resilient and highly available network,” says Therrien. “Any downtime of critical devices or machinery could bring our plant to a standstill.”

The new solution needed to support remote management, and be capable of running continuously and reliably in the harsh environment of industrial waste processing.

Improved information availability with reduced complexity

Advanced Allied Telesis products and features ensure high availability with comprehensive capabilities, yet are still easy to use. Industrial switches enable reliable connectivity to sensors, security cameras, and industrial machinery in the challenging environment of the processing buildings.

The new Allied Telesis solution uses VCStack™ network virtualization technology to create single virtual units out of multiple x510 Series switches in the network core, and in each building for fully resilient operation. IE200 and IE300 Series industrial switches support operation at wide temperature ranges and in harsh environments, ensuring systems running across the four waste processing buildings are always available.

Allied Telesis Autonomous Management Framework™ (AMF) automates and simplifies management to reduce both complexity and network administration time and effort – IT staff have key information right at hand to make sure the network supports continuous plant operation.

As Therrien says, “Our employees can now access online business systems remotely if working offsite, and both Séché Trédi IT staff and Allied Telesis professional services can access the network from anywhere at any time, to resolve any problems that would otherwise hinder our business.“

Séché Trédi Salaise now enjoys the seamless operation of the many devices and systems converged on the new network. Staff can monitor and manage building control and processing machinery from the central control room, while security cameras ensure visibility of equipment and a safe working environment.

The new network seamlessly integrates data that enables efficient waste processing and business agility. “With the information available from IoT sensors, building automation systems, and machinery control, we can now easily inform decisions that drive continuous operational improvement,” says Therrien.
